Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring Online: Is It Safe?
Yes — if you buy from a certified, established dealer. The key is knowing what to look for and understanding that certification is your protection. At Diagem, every diamond comes with an independent GIA or IGI certificate, meaning the quality is verified before you buy, not just claimed by the seller.
Step 1: Set Your Budget
Before looking at diamonds, set a realistic budget. The old "three months' salary" rule is marketing, not advice. Buy what you can comfortably afford. With Diagem's factory-direct pricing, your budget goes significantly further than at a traditional retail jeweller — typically 30-50% further for natural diamonds, and even more for lab-grown.
Step 2: Decide Between Natural and Lab-Grown
Both are real, certified diamonds. Natural diamonds carry a scarcity premium and have historically held value. Lab-grown diamonds offer the same beauty and certification at 50-80% less cost — meaning a substantially larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget. See our guide on Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds for a full comparison.
Step 3: Prioritise Cut Above All Else
Cut determines how brilliant and sparkly a diamond looks. An Excellent cut diamond with G colour and VS2 clarity will outshine a poor cut D/FL stone. Always start with cut. At Diagem, our minimum cut grade is Excellent (EX) — ensuring every stone delivers maximum fire and brilliance.
Step 4: Choose Your Shape
Round brilliant is the most popular shape and offers the best light performance. Oval and cushion cuts are trending and offer great value (often 20-30% less than round for the same carat). Princess, emerald, and pear cuts each have distinctive looks. There is no wrong choice — it comes down to personal style.
Step 5: Balance the Other Cs
With cut prioritised, balance colour and clarity for your budget:
- Colour: G-H is the sweet spot — near-colourless with excellent value. D-F is premium, but the difference is rarely visible once set in a ring.
- Clarity: VS2 is eye-clean for most shapes. SI1 can also be eye-clean in round cuts — our team can advise on specific stones.
- Carat: Adjust carat last to fit within your budget after optimising cut, colour, and clarity.
Step 6: Verify Certification
Every diamond you buy should come with a GIA or IGI certificate. This document independently verifies every quality characteristic. Never buy an uncertified diamond online. All Diagem diamonds include their certification documents.
Step 7: Understand Delivery
Diagem ships all orders fully insured with end-to-end tracking. Delivery within South Africa takes 5-10 business days. Your diamond arrives securely packaged with its certification — ready for setting at your jeweller of choice, or to be presented as purchased.
If you're open to a completely personalised piece, Diagem also offers bespoke diamond jewellery — custom-designed from the stone up, at factory-direct pricing. It's worth considering if you have a specific vision in mind that off-the-shelf pieces don't quite match.
